Start date No fixed schedule.
End date Usually through to graduation, subject to initial 6-month trial period, and grant funding availability
Hours per week Initially about 8. Sometimes 40 (full-time) during break periods. Sometimes zero during quiet periods.
Location Buildings 53 (CSAC) and 13 (across from CSAC)
Number of positions As at April 2005: 1 or 2 in ag. water quality and lagoon ecology, and 1 in Yellowstone work
Pay rate $9 for six months. Then $10 for six more months. Then $12 for a year. Then $13 etc.
More if special experience is required.
Description of work CCoWS is a grant-funded research group with diverse clients and interests. We usually have about 5 contract research projects running at any given time. The areas of work include water quality sampling and analysis, GIS mapping and associated field work, lagoon ecology studies, hydrology, simulation modeling, remote sensing, and wildlife ecology. We have many projects in Central Coast watersheds, and a large project at Yellowstone National Park. Internship work is similarly diverse, from menial tasks like photocopying and data entry, through to water sampling and habitat mapping and chemical lab analysis, and also including winter wildlife and snow hydrology fieldwork in remote wilderness areas.
Minimimum qualifications
  • Sophomore or Junior; OR significant previous work experience.
  • A recommendation from a faculty member
  • Environmental major or computer science major
  • Grade Point Average 3.3 or higher.
  • A proven interest in the environment
  • A stated desire to link class projects or a capstone thesis to your work at CCoWS
  • Ability to work both within a team, and independently
  • Strong experience with Excel and Word
  • Some experience with GIS and GPS
  • Valid CA driving licence
Desired qualifications and qualities One or more from the following list:
  • Eagerness to work under hard field conditions (e.g. rain, cold, mud, night)
  • Solid experience with Access, ArcView, or TNT-MIPS
  • Web-design experience
  • Remote sensing experience
  • Chemical laboratory analysis experience
  • Experience working in snow
  • Knowledge of agriculture and/or associated industries
  • Knowledge of aquatic field techniques (fish, invertebrates etc.)
  • Good writing skills
  • Electro-mechanical design skills
  • Knowledge of statistics
  • Name starting with 'J'. (just kidding, but look at the names of our current team !!!)
Exceptional qualifications We would very much like to hire an intern who is already an expert a programming in C or C++.
