Need a page for California Department of Fish and Wildlife
History in California
Before California was officially recognized as a state, Spanish and Mexican game and fish laws were already in place. In 1851 California enacted its first game and fish law to to protect oysters. This was followed by other laws to protect species such as: elk, salmon, quail, and deer.[1]
