Summary

The Carmel Valley alluvial aquifer resides in the lower 15 miles of the Carmel River and is underlain by Miocene marine shales. [1] The California American Water Company, Cal-Am, is the direct supplier water to the Monterey Peninsula extracting water primarily from the Carmel Valley alluvial aquifer. At first, Cal-Am would take water directly from the Carmel River, over time, the Carmel Valley alluvial aquifer became the main source of water followed by the Seaside basin. The Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project by Cal-Am will use a desalination plant as the main source of water for the Monterey Peninsula thereby reducing the amount of water extracted from the Carmel Valley alluvial aquifer.
