Overview
Fort Hunter Liggett is located in Monterey County in the central coast area of California. It is the largest U.S. Army Reserve Command post with approximately 165,000 acres.
History
- Originally named Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, it has been an active Army installation since 1940 when the U.S. Government purchased land from William Randolph Hurst Jr. and other neighboring landowners.
- In 1975, it was redesignated Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation.
- The Fort now is a sub-installation of Fort McCoy, WI. It operates primarily as the Army Reserve Command Western Reserve Training Center serving Active and Reserve components.
- It provides training opportunities to all U.S. military components and those of allied nations.
