Overview

Fort Hunter Liggett is located in Monterey County in the central coast area of California. It is the largest U.S. Army Reserve Command post with approximately 165,000 acres of land. It currently provides training opportunities to all U.S. armed forces and those of allied nations.

History in the Central Coast of California

  • Originally named Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, it has been an active Army installation since 1940 when the U.S. Government purchased land from William Randolph Hurst Jr. and other neighboring landowners.
  • In 1975, it was redesignated Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation.
  • The Fort now is a sub-installation of Fort McCoy, WI.
  • It operates primarily as the Army Reserve Command Western Reserve Training Center serving Active and Reserve components [1].
  • It provides training opportunities to all U.S. military components and those of allied nations [2].
