A environmental summary by the ENVS 560/L Watershed Systems class at CSUMB.

Overview

The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area (MSNHA) first took form in 1999 after a community event discussing how to create a relationship between the cultural aspects of the region and the area's quality of life. In 2009, Congress officially designated the MSNHA. The area spans six counties north of Alabama's Tennessee River water basin and was developed to help preserve the history of the region by focusing on music, Native American heritage, and the Tennessee River [1].

Mission

"To promote cultural tourism by education, preservation, and conservation of the heritage and culture of the six counties within the designated area. MSNHA seeks to inform, educate, develop and interpret visitor-ready sites, create living history experiences, and chronicle the evolution of the area's landscape." [1]

Activities

MSNHA has a community grants program and has given out over 20 grants since 2016. They also offer educational resources and tools for teachers to highlight the culture and history of northwest Alabama.

The National Park Service launched a program called Operation Pollination to focus attention on the loss of habitat for bees and other pollinators around the world. The MSNHA has taken the lead on organizing people to help pollinators in northwest Alabama [2].

The League of Outdoor Women is a MSNHA program designed to help educate women about camping, hiking, backpacking, and other outdoor activities. They hold workshops, campouts, and group hikes in locations across the MSNHA [3].
