A organizational summary by the ENVS 560/L Watershed Systems class at CSUMB.

Overview

The Conservancy for the Range of the Condor and former Congressman Sam Farr have proposed a new National Heritage Area (NHA) be designated by Congress, including the flight range of the California Condor.

The primary purpose of an NHA designation is to facilitate inter-agency collaboration for land preservation, maintenance, new projects, and so on. NHA entities are also advised by the National Park Service (NPS) on technical and planning issues, while also receiving limited financial assistance from NPS.

NHAs are places where natural, cultural and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. The NHA designation fosters a community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development. Through public-private partnerships, NHA entities support historic preservation, natural resource conservation, recreation, heritage tourism, and educational projects. Leveraging funds and long-term support for projects, NHA partnerships foster pride of place and an enduring stewardship ethic.
