An environmental summary created by the ENVS 560/L Watershed Systems class at CSUMB.

Summary

Roberts Lake is a freshwater lake located in the city of Seaside, and within the Canyon del Rey Watershed. It was formerly an estuary but the development of construction and fill for local highways removed any saltwater influence. The lake is connected to Laguna Grande Regional Park, and was named after Dr. John Roberts who was a founder of the city.[1] The lake provides habitat for local waterfowl, including the rare Heermann's Gull.vref name="HG2001">[https://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/nab/v055n03/p00375-p00378.pdf Roberson D, Bailey S, Carratello R. 2001. Ecological Importance

Historically, Heermann's Gulls were thought to use a small island in the lake for breeding, making this the species' only breeding location in the United States. The island has since been submerged, but there is still a population of gulls living in the area that attempt to nest.(reference about the gulls and the lakes island, CDR basin plan)[3] An attempt to restore this breeding population by creating an artificial island in the lake was launched in 2019 as part of the blank blank blank.(refernece about the plan)[4]
