Santa Lucia Conservancy (SLC) is a non-profit land trust charged with stewardship of Santa Lucia Preserve, 18,000 acres of preserved wildlands located in the Carmel Watershed in Central California.[1]

Mission statement

"The Santa Lucia Conservancy is dedicated to the stewardship of the unique natural resources of the Santa Lucia Preserve and to promoting human settlements that are ecologically sensitive. It is our goal to advance understanding of the interfaces between human residences and natural environments to benefit our community and society at large. Using the vast natural laboratory of our 20,000 acre Preserve, we work collaboratively on resource management, education and research to support and test this model of environmentally compatible human settlement."[1]

Responsibilities

Santa Lucia Conservancy is charged with protection of designated conserved lands, and approaches this charge via land management, ecological research, easement stewardship, and environmental education.[2]

Land management

Santa Lucia Conservancy manages 10,350 acres of wildlands in Santa Lucia Preserve, while the remaining acreage is privately owned, yet all 18,000 acres are managed by collaborations between SLC and private landowners. SLC land management activities include:[2]

  • controlled burning
  • foliage mowing & pruning
  • application of herbicides
  • controlled ungulate grazing
  • ecological and environmental monitoring

Ecological research

Santa Lucia Conservancy supports on-site ecological research through private studies, collaboration with researchers, and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate interns.[2]

Easement stewardship

Santa Lucia Conservancy is obliged to enforce compliance with rules set in place for conservation easements (use of conserved land for other purposes, such as residences).[2]
