Setting

The Triple M Ranch is a 195 acre farm located in the lower Carneros Watershed at 420 Hall Road, Las Lomas, CA. 95076, as illustrated here [1]. Although the reach of Carneros Creek that bisects the property has been channelized and straightened in past decades, the creek is currently in the process of "self-restoration" [2] , where the creek is no longer confined within the artificial channel as dredge spoil levees have been allowed to degrade.

Purpose and Goals

The Triple M Ranch is owned and operated by the Agriculture and Land Based Training Association (ALBA), a non-profit organization based out of Monterey CA [3]. The Triple M Ranch was purchased by ALBA, with assistance from the California State Coastal Conservancy, and the Packard Foundation in 2000. As part of the conditional assistance with purchasing the property, ALBA set aside 135 acres of the property as natural land easement [4], and gave development rights to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF). This agreement ensures that the Triple M Ranch will remain undeveloped, with a substantial portion of the property preserved for natural lands.

Wetland Restoration Project

The ESF in conjunction with ALBA, completed a Land Management Plan, which outlines the project that will restore or enhance the natural lands on the property. The goals of this management plan include (among others) the restoration of the Carneros Creek riparian corridor as well as on site wetlands, the creation of hills and ponds for the purpose of providing habitat for special status amphibians, providing flood protection, and the improvement of water quality. [5] [6]. This project will restore approximately 40 acres of wetlands and floodplains, which have been repeatedly dredged and used for agriculture in the 80 years prior to ALBA's ownership [7].
