Summary

Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national non-profit organization with over 300,000 members and supporters with seven members on their Board of Trustees[1]. TU is mainly comprised of professionals that ensure its leadership in fishery restoration at the local, state, and national levels [1]. TU's non-professional members are volunteers who enjoy fly fishing and the native trout species[2]. TU's mission encompasses 2 overarching goals:

  • Conserve native cold-water trout species and the fisheries that rear them[1][2]
  • Restore the watersheds encompassing the native cold-water trout to enact modern assessment methods to assess the health of native trout species wherever they are naturally found [1].

To fulfill this mission, TU uses the best available science and assessment methods for the each species of trout they aim to conserve, protect, and restore. TU also works with passionate anglers who want to give back to the environment because anglers were involved in the creation of TU, and still have an important role in it today [1].

History

TU was founded in Grayling, Michigan in 1959 by fishermen who were united by their passion for trout fishing and their growing discontent with the state's practice of stocking trout into their local waters [3]. In 1963, TU released its first policy statement, which later persuaded the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to reduce its policy of put-and-take stocking with fishery trout and rely more on natural populations[3]. The reduction in reliance on put-and-take stocking spread to Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, and Pennsylvania, where other chapters of TU were soon created and the advocation for an increase in natural trout populations took place[3]. The National Conservation Agenda of TU is now set by a National Leadership Council. Most of the current TU body is comprised of volunteers and conservation professionals, whereas the remainder of the group is made up of passionate anglers. [3]

Trout Unlimited of California

TU is one of several environmental advocacy organizations (Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other Non-Profit Organizations in California's Central Coast Region) operating in California's Central Coast region. The 2018 Trout Unlimited of California mission statement is to protect, reconnect, restore, and sustain California's salmonid fisheries, their watersheds, and the diversity of their populations. [4]. TU of California is active in the Central Valley, working to provide adequate passage for coldwater trout such as Rainbow and Steelhead trout[4]. Beyond the Central Valley, TU of California is active in Truckee and the Lahontan Basin, which spans across Oregon, California, and Nevada [4].

The different chapters of TU work with the trout local to their area, but share their passion. The Truckee chapter of TU works with Cutthroat trout, whereas the other chapters work with Rainbow and Steelhead trout [4].

Steinbeck Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Steinbeck Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited is located in Carmel. Their primary projects have dealt with work on behalf of the salmon and Steelhead fisheries of the California's Central Coast Region. [5]
