Summary

Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national non-profit organization with over 300,000 members and supporters and seven members of their Board of Trustees. They are comprised of professionals that ensure that TU is a leader in fisheries restoration at the local, state, and national levels. [1] TU's mission encompasses 2 overarching goals:

  • Conserve native coldwater trout species and the fisheries that rear them[1]
  • Restore the watersheds encompassing the native coldwater trout to enact modern assessment methods to assess the health of native trout species wherever they are naturally found [1].

To fulfill this mission, TU works with anglers who have a want to give back to the environment (who make a portion of TU's advocates) and uses the best available science and assessment methods for the each species of trout they aim to conserve, protect, and restore[1].

Background

TU was founded near Grayling, Michigan around 1959 by fishermen who were united by their passion for trout fishing and their growing discontent with state's practice of stocking trout into their local waters. [2] Between 1962 to 1963, TU released its first policy statement, which later persuaded the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to reduce its policy of put-and-take stocking with Trout. [2] The National Conservation Agenda of TU is now set by a National Leadership Council. Most of the current TU body is comprised of volunteers and conservation professionals. [2]

Trout Unlimited of California

TU is one of a number of environmental advocacy organizations (Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other Non-Profit Organizations in California's Central Coast Region) operating in California's Central Coast region. The 2018 Trout Unlimited of California mission statement is to protect, reconnect, restore, and sustain California's salmonid fisheries, their watersheds, and the diversity of their populations. [3]

Steinbeck Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Steinbeck Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited is located in Carmel. Their primary projects have dealt with work on behalf of the trout, salmon and Steelhead fisheries of the California's Central Coast Region. [4]
