Overview

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is a federal agency within the United States Department of the Interior. On the Monterey Peninsula, the BLM Central Coast Field Office manages the Fort Ord National Monument (FONM) near Salinas, California.

Mission

To sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. [1]

Legal Status / Authority

BLM was formed in 1946 by President Harry S. Truman in the combination of two existing government agencies, the General Land Office and the Grazing Service.
