Some notes on steps taken / or could be taken

  1. Download SSURGO data for each of the four counties on the map from one of the Useful Data Sources
  2. Create a shapefile representing the extent of the map (one way):
    1. Data Frame Properties --> write down the coordinates of the view extent
    2. ArcCatalog --> Create a new shapefile (polygon)
    3. Edit the shapefile in ArcMap; draw a rough box; then right-click on the points to manually enter the XY extent coords that were written down previously
  3. In the steps below, work with the 'MUSYM' shapefiles
  4. Clip each county's SSURGO data to the map rectangle just created:
    1. Analysis tools --> Extract --> Clip
  5. Merge the four clipped county MUSYM shapefiles into one shapefile:
    1. Data management tools --> General --> Merge
  6. Add this clipped-merged shapefile to your view, and define symbology with a different color for each category of MUSYM
    1. Note, different counties appear to have used different codes for the same soil types, so there will be mis-matches at county boundaries
  7. Use the identify tool to make a list of just the soil types inside the watershed boundary
  8. Do some kind of 'select' operation to create a shapefile or layer-file with the soil types that are inside the watershed boundary
  9. Add a legend for this inside-watershed layer, and add an annotation noting that the legend does not contain soil types that are outside the watershed
